New Dental Online Claim System Launched
In January 2018, over 300 dentists signed up for a new online dental claiming system. This new online system was developed in collaboration with dentists, who have worked together with PCRS, to improve the administration of the Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS).
DTSS is a means-tested scheme operated by the HSE. Dentists contracted under the scheme provide certain treatments to patients, aged over 16, who hold medical cards. Currently, there are over 1.27 million adults eligible for treatment under the scheme.
The HSE’s Primary Care Reimbursement Service (PCRS) manages the payments to dentists. In 2017, over 1.2 million treatments were provided to 413,128 eligible patients by 1,418 private contractors participating in the scheme.
This new online claim system now allows DTSS contractors to submit dental claims online. Prior to the online system, dentists submitted their claims for payment each month on paper, for manual processing by staff in PCRS.
This is the first phase of an improvement journey over the coming 18 months. The second phase of the roll out, currently in development, will deliver the ability for dentists to apply online for prior approval from their Principal Dental Surgeon in 2018, which will improve turnaround time for approval with patients receiving treatment in a more timely fashion.
