This workshop explores the impact of loss through death and illness on children. The impact of loss will be addressed in relation to child development and family coping strategies. Use of video, children’s art and materials will be included.
On completion of the workshop participants will be able to:
- understand the importance of developmental stages in loss;
- reflect on the emotional impact of working with grieving children;
- learn skills in the use of materials;
- develop skills in determining levels/and appropriate response/to child’s response to loss.
Anne Marie Jones is the Head Medical Social Worker and Bereavement Co-ordinator at Temple Street Children’s University Hospital for the past 10 years, having spent most of her career as a social worker in health related social work. Her interest in children and loss arose from her work with families affected by HIV and AIDS and continues today in her work in the Bereavement Service at Temple Street. She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network since its inception where she has led the development of the Irish Childhood Bereavement Pyramid (2014) and the National Standards for “Standards for Supporting Bereaved Children and Young People – A Framework for Development” (2017).
